Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious skin disease, caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. These mites will burrow through the skin, causing intense itching and irritation. The scratching that results from mange is what causes the majority of damage seen in infected animals. Sadly, mange still ravages wombats in all populations. Modern treatments can effect a cure but, of course, in the wild these cannot be applied. The cure Briabehk effected is imaginary and bases itself on the idea that a systemic poison might indeed poison the mange mite as well.
