5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend this Gripping Tale of Nature, Power — and Wombats!

Briabehk is the riveting and hauntingly beautiful story of a lone wombat and her unique, unputdownable adventures, yet echoes the universal truths of power in all its forms — nature, politics, religion, education, medicine, community, and that of the individual. To read this book was to feel nature at its very essence. Even the rocks and streams of the Snowy Mountains seemed to come to life, as I experienced them with paws and a snout. :)
I was in the middle of moving as I read this book, and kept finding myself taking far too many breaks from packing for just a few more pages, and then reading late into the night when I should have been resting. But I wouldn't have had it any other way. Steel's novel was not only a joy to read, beginning to end, but it is one that will stick with me for a lifetime.

We were really impressed with the depth and scope of this epic novel. Briabehk is a fascinating and sympathetic heroine and narrating the story from her point of view is an interesting twist on traditional storytelling.

I was hooked from page one and never let go. It's so delicious, I was tempted to race through, but I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to savor it and make it last. There is adventure, unexpected plot twists, and well developed characters. The author is a master storyteller!

A master storyteller gives us a sublimely told tale full of rich color and characters set in a vividly portrayed landscape. This is a story that fills the senses with wonder, excitement, grief, and finally, the ultimate triumph over deep adversity and oppression through strength of character, courage, compassion, and mastery of long-forgotten knowledge. An amazingly well written first offering from this talented author. One hopes for more.

I have always been an avid reader, with words having the ability to transport my mind to the times, places , characters and emotions they describe - this tale of a humble wombat does just that , and does it well. Who knew the workings of a wombat society would be so intrigueing , and a page-turner? I really enjoyed it.

I'm a bit of a slow reader, and I relished all of this book!
I don't know if I would have picked up a book about wombats if I didn't know the author as my esteemed sailing teacher, but that would have been a shame. It is brilliant! Not just the story, but the character development, and the world created within the pages kept me pleasantly awake some late nights.
I had intended to pass along the book to a friend after finishing, but now I believe I'll just gift them their own copy and hang on to this one myself. :)
